Celeste Junior High School set a goal at the beginning of the school year to find new ways to motivate students to read. The teachers decided to have a live auction at the end of the school year where students could spend their accumulated points from the Accelerated Reading program. The kids worked very hard all year long to accumulate points. The points then acted as “Devil Dollars” for the auction. Students also gained “Devil Dollars” for good behavior, perfect attendance and honor roll. The students learned tips and hints for successful bidding. Auctioneer, Terry Driggers, generously donated services and actually helped the students understand the basics of bidding in a live auction. Some students even got to auction off items.
Celeste Junior High would like to thank those who donated items and volunteered to help with the big event. Theresa Moore, CJHS reading teacher, stated, “Many wonderful items were donated such as an X-box, water toys, Vera Bradley duffel bags, gift cards for the movies, Chicken Express, Amazing Jakes, and much more. We used this opportunity as a teaching tool for our students. Not only did they learn how to participate in an auction but it required them to strategize, calculate, and prioritize. We want to thank our community for supporting the students of Celeste Junior High. Please visit Celesteisd.org for all community supporters.”
